Notes & Combos
What’s up, Plantcels! After using Sunavalon to great success in the 1st stage of the last KC Cup, I managed to pilot the deck used by my handsomely creepy husbando Spectre all the way to KOG, albeit with slightly more complications than expected. The power creep has made the end board even less potent than it used to be, and I ran into quite a few matchups or game-ending cards that made this climb a lot more brutal than it was last month. Nevertheless, the fact that I am one of the first people to KOG with this deck this month without getting demoted at all proves that I am Spectre’s strongest kitten and I get to make him make that face he made when he got way too lost in the sauce while trying to Extra-Link against Lightning, only with much more satisfying results >:3 also worth noting that I decked out my copy of Mother tree Dryantrentiay with a bunch of Chronicle bling because she is literally #Mother
Now a little about my list & the matchups I ran into. I used some of the new word release gems to pick up a 2nd copy of Sowing so I could have a good discard for Shrine during my combo and also to better ensure I open w/ one to play through interaction better. I also messed around with my 6 flex slots throughout the climb, experimenting with Book of Eclipse at 2-3 while changing ratios of Crow & backrow hate (which is why I used it during my Star Seraph replay below). Ultimately, I decided that I’d rather see more backrow removal because otherwise there’s a host of Field Spells in the format that completely curbstomp me, and Crow is probably the best Skill-friendly hand trap in the format as it’s helpful against almost every deck right now. Anyone else trying this deck out can try out their own ratios and provide any input in the comments below.
As far as matchups go, this deck eviscerates Borrel Link (sorry, “Master” Varis) and Time Thief (don’t let them know that they should Redoer much later in the combo shhhh), usually does fine against Lyriluscs, Sharks, Unchained, Striker, and Seraphs depending on how much interaction they open and how you play interrupt their plays, and flat-out loses to Ra, Shaddoll and Bishbaalkin variants of Fleur every time. We also completely fold to Nibiru as well as Necrovalley, Summon Breaker, and Zombie world if we fail to open backrow removal. KOG match below was against my other favorite deck, Altergeist, which I really want to use again soon.
